The Philippines will join the global Earth Hour event by switching off lights from 8:30 to 9:30PM on March 26, 2011. The main switch-off event will begin at 6 PM at the SM Mall of Asia Globe area. The event will serve as a kick-off for a planned year-long World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) climate change solutions campaign.
Now in its fourth year in the Philippines, this year’s switch off will no longer aim for numbers, but it will rather aim for meaning. WWF-Philippines aims to go beyond Earth Hour by launching a year-long information and education campaign on climate change for Filipinos on energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate adaptation.
Earth Hour originated in Australia in 2007, and embraced in the Philippines in 2008, has become a global phenomenon. Over a billion people from 128 countries participated in Earth Hour 2010, marking it as the largest environmental event in human history. The Philippines topped global Earth Hour participation for both 2009 and 2010. Ten million Filipinos in 647 towns, cities and municipalities switched off in 2009, and 15 million Filipinos in 1,076 towns and cities joined the 2010 switch-off.
