MANILA, Philippines - Netizens on Twitter could not stop talking about the grand finals of the ABS-CBN talent show on TV, "Showtime", held Saturday. As a result, "Showtime" finalists landed on the top trending topics worldwide of the microblogging site Twitter.
At 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, "Philippine Island" landed on the second spot on the trending list. Philippine Island Assassins is the name of the group which also bagged the second highest score (9.7) in the "Showtime" grand finals.
"GENSAN", on the other hand, occupied the sixth spot on the trending list at that time. XB Gensan won the highly competitive "Showtime" grand finals with a score of 9.875.
At 4 p.m. on Saturday, "Philippine Island" held on to its second spot on the Twitter trending list, while GENSAN went down to the 10th spot.
Twitter users reacted to the "Showtime" finals results, with some happy that XB Gensan won, and others wishing Philippine Island Assassins should have won instead.
But as not all Twitter users were familiar with Philippine Island Assassins, comments also poured in about the Philippines itself.
Twitter user Jasmine Villegas wrote, "Philippine Island mahal kita! Pinoy pride baby", and this was retweeted by other Twitter users.
Another user, katvperry, tweeted, "I love the Philippine Island! I was there last year and twas awesome." This was also retweeted many times.
User ValeriaOlvera, on the other hand, tweeted, "i wanna go to a Philippine Island this summer, but maybe it won't happen."
Spammer got into the picture
And then a spammer joined in.
A message from a Tweeter user with the name "CA_Pharmacy" mentioned Philippine Island and promised Tweeter users a chance to win an iPhone if they retweet a link to a spam site.
An example of one such message went "Now I am thin! Philippine Island ll6 http://illshealthsite.com RT, please. iPhone4." Unsuspecting Twitter users kept retweeting spam messages like this believing they may have a chance to own a new smartphone.
As a result, as of 5 p.m. on Saturday, "Philippine Island" is still going strong at the second spot on the Twitter trending list worldwide, no thanks to the spam tweets. GENSAN, on the other hand, got bumped off the 10th spot.
But Ateneo made it as the 6th top trending topic on Twitter at 5:20 p.m. as the college team battled it out with arch rival La Salle in the UAAP men's basketball competition.
