'Precious Hearts Romances: Impostor' nominated at 2011 International Emmy Awards for Telenovela!

Nominations for the 39th International Emmy® Awards were announced last October 3,2011 by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at a Press Conference at Mipcom. There are 40 nominees in 10 categories. Winners will be announced at a Black-Tie Ceremony on November 21, 2011 at the Hilton New York Hotel.

Nominees:

Nominations span a record 20 countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, The Philippines, and The United Kingdom, The competition has three rounds of judging over a period of 6 months, with participation from over 800 judges in 67 different countries.

"The International Emmy® Awards is a tough competition with over 1000 entries from 61 countries, this year." said Bruce L. GMA News Review on Star Cinema Adventures of Pureza: 'actually fails' & 'story suffered'

This is actually not the first time they write a negative reviews... remember on 'In the Name of Love'? LINK and Forever And a Day Article Link "My problem with Forever and a Day is the lack of originality. The plot is recycled—love at first sight between a man who is a failure in his beloved career and a young woman who is about to die because of cancer. Remember the Hollywood flick A Walk To Remember?"

I've got faith in Soxy Topacio. Always have. Especially after that wonderful comedy that was Ded Na Si Lolo (2009) that could only rock the world of anyone who follows local movies - local comedies in particular. Topacio brilliantly captured the tragicomedy that is death and the family in a lower class setting without making it seem like a judgment, or an apologia for that matter.

Ah, but maybe that was a movie that was by most counts about being an indie, those were the days when Soxy as writer-director could freely demand that his story be told without the limits of network stars and box office success. Such is the tale of his recent comedy Adventures of Pureza, Queen of the Riles (Star Cinema) where Melai Cantiveros is obviously the point, and everything else in the movie is allowed to suffer. Which is to say that the story suffered. Where it could've been a swift narration of what's expected, it became a series of events that wanted to tie together the character of Pureza. And yet there was nothing in Melai as an actress that made this wholeness relevant or crucial, nothing at all that made it seem like it was needed. In fact, given the acting she did here an audience would've been happy enough with no resolutions to her persona, and she could've moved from beginning to end playing mostly herself: loud and crazy, over-the-top silly, no stretch in characterization at all.

Given these limitations in a lead actress, the decision it seems was to work with everyone - and everything - else other than Melai. This might be why over and above veteran actress Gina Pareño whose tongue-in-cheek kontrabida character just worked as expected , there was some really good acting here, the kind that knew to be ironic, to be absurd, that was conscious of the story as comedy, that knew of the story's limitations given its genre.

From the younger adopted brother (Martin del Rosario) who's Pureza's one reason for living, the brother's best friend who's a fixture in the house (Nico Antonio), from the photographer searching for lost love (Joem Bascon) to the bestfriend who couldn't profess love (Jason Francisco). Yes, in this movie that has a female lead the first step at comedy is dependent on co-actors who do the acting better.

Case in point: del Rosario plays the role of the hot younger brother with absurdity reserved, for well, the fact that he's called Ulam, and is wearing short shorts and wifebeaters the whole time that he prays to the heavens. Antonio's portrayal of Hipon is credible and endearing, even when yes, he is kain-katawan-tapon-ulo, (ergo hipon), and is kept as a secondary character, something that is not at all about talent.

Bascon had enough chutzpah to be the photographer with everything to hide, who surprisingly but believably did an impromptu tongue-in-cheek song and dance number that was one of the movie's absolute high points. But the one person here who was equally a surprise and revelation was Francisco, who could speak with his eyes, no matter that all it needed to show was longing and jealousy. Between Cantiveros and Francisco it was clear who had more of a character to deal with and create, versus just playing a bigger version of his real self.

And this might ultimately be the problem with comedies such as Adventures of Pureza: gone are the days when all comedians needed to do in film was go over-the-top, outdo every other person in the silly department, and survive it. There was a time Ruffa Mae Quinto as the superhero Booba could get away with nary an acting bone (mostly because she was willing to be practically naked), but in the present, with the likes of AiAi de las Alas in the Tanging Ina, series, even more so of Eugene Domingo in everything from Kimmy Dora to My Valentine Girls, there is a greater expectation of our commercial comedies. Not just in terms of acting, but more importantly in terms of having stories that are equally as funny or absurd, and everything in between. Commercial comedy has survived because of quick-paced funny storytelling (think those Toni Gonzaga and Vhong Navarro movies), and its here that Adventures of Pureza, actually fails. At some points in this narrative what might have been the quicker routes at storytelling became about the roundabout story of love and romance and family; at some points it was clear that the effort was being made at pointing to Melai as the lead star, lest we forget.

Which if this review is any indication, barely mattered really. There was laughter as provided by Pareño and the rest of the cast, there were bright brilliant moments of comedy. Right there was the director's hand. I've got faith in Soxy Topacio. Always will.

Melai Cantiveros denies that Jason Francisco gave her an engagement ring!

After her first week as part of Happy Yipee Yehey!, Melai Cantiveros is now happily anticipating the premiere of her newest project, Precious Hearts Romances presents Mana Po, which premieres this Monday, February 21.

Because of her hectic schedule, the 22-year-old former Pinoy Big Brother housemate admitted that she and boyfriend Jason Francisco had to celebrate Valentine’s a week ahead. This date also coincided with their one-year anniversary which they celebrated last February 8 at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. “Nung Valentine’s day, binigyan niya ako ng red roses. Pero nung nag-date kami sa hotel, na-surprise ako kasi siya talaga yung nag-arrange ng lahat nun. Na-shock nga ako kasi nag-absent siya sa Banana Split. After nung taping ko, sinalubong niya ako with flowers, hindi na pala siya umuwi after nung taping niya,” she revealed during the Mana Po presscon held last February 17 at the ABS-CBN compound.

Melai said their evening was spent sharing a nice romantic dinner which was capped off by a relaxing couple’s massage at the hotel spa. Melai did not expect that Jason would surprise her with another kind of gift. “Minsan lang naman kami mag-bonding ng ganun. Kumain kami tapos binigyan niya ako flowers. Akala ko tapos na ang lahat nun pero binigyan din niya ako ng ring,” she said.

Melai denied that it was an engagement ring, even admitting that she accidentally saw the price tag of the gift, which Jason had forgotten to remove. “Nakita ko yung price. Hindi pala naalis. Hindi siya engagement ring, basta ring siya. Charriol ring worth more than 10k. ‘Pag inisip mo, ang laki na rin nun ‘di ba, parang isang araw na trabaho. After niya ibigay sa akin yun, nagpa-massage kami dun. Hanggang 4 am kami nag-pa-spa dun. Nag-enjoy and then umuwi na kami. Sabi niya package deal na din daw yung date na yun. Valentines and anniversary date namin,” she said.

According to Melai, Jason chose the ring’s design, which resembles the number eight in honor of their anniversary. Unfortunately, she was unable to show off the piece of jewelry during the Mana Po presscon. “Hindi ko nasuot ngayon kasi nag-te-taping kami. Hindi ko sinusuot yun kasi ‘pag matanggal ko, baka mawala,” she said.

While Melai makes sure she always has something nice for her boyfriend, she revealed that Jason does not like to receive extravagant gifts from her. “Ang pinakamahal kong binigay sa kanya is underwear na galing Zara. Nagalit siya kasi sa isang piraso daw nun, makakabili na ng tatlo from Bench. Pero bago nun, binigyan ko siya ng relo na may cellphone. Kasi si Jason, alam mo yung cellphone niya kung saan saan niya iniiwan minsan. Kaya para mag-learn siya ng lesson, ngayon kahit saan siya pumunta, pag-nag-ring masasagot niya. Pinadala ko from Singapore. Pero madami rin naman siyang gift sa akin na over-over sa mahal. Binigyan rin niya ako ng malaking teddy bear na kasing laki ko,” she shared.

She’s hosting “Happy Yippe Yehey” at noontime and will also be seen daily in “Precious Hearts Romances Presents Mana Po” starting Monday with her boyfriend Jason Francisco. Won’t she be overexposed? “Hindi naman,” she says. “Pero bahala ang tao kung magsawa sila sa’kin. Basta may suweldo ako.” After playing support in “Impostor” and “Kokey”, are they ripe to topbill their own show? “Siguro. Nag-workshop kami rito kina Direk Ted at Katski kasi dati, we just play ourselves. Dito, bagong Melai at Jason ang makikita, lalo na ako as Brandi de la Paz, a rich spoiled brat na nag-aral abroad. Mahirap, kasi hindi ako yun. Kinontrol nila ko rito. Bawal maglukot-lukot ng mukha at mag-over-over. Lagi nilang nire-remind, hindi ka si Melai rito. Yung yaman ng family namin, di sa’kin pinamana ng ama ko, si John Arcilla. Binigay kay Jason, anak ng best friend niyang si Boboy Garovillo na inonse pala niya noong araw. Siempre, hindi ko matanggap yun at hahanapin ko si Jason para bawiin ang mana ko.”

Does she have intimate love scenes with Jason? “Hindi naman intimate, sensual lang.” How did she spend Valentine with Jason? “Nag-taping kami tapos nagpa-spa.” How come it’s said they spent the night in a hotel? “Ha? Paano nyo nalaman? Wala naman akong sinabihan, yung friend ko lang. Tsismosa pa lang yung kaibigan ko.” Is she ready to marry Jason? “Naku, hindi. Ang babata pa namin. Magpo-focus muna kami sa career namin. Talagang malaki pinagbago ng buhay ko at nagpapasalamat ako dahil natutulungan ko na ang mga magulang at mga kapatid ko.”
