100 Days to Heaven: Most Inspiring Television Series!

MANILA, Philippines - Not only has “100 Days to Heaven” earned the nods of TV viewers and critics, it has also been made the teaching topic of a church sermon.

According to respected critic and columnist Nestor Torre, he heard a sermon himself wherein the priest urged churchgoers to learn from the story of the mean, icy, and cunning owner of a toy empire, Anna Manalastas.

In his sermon, the priest said people can draw inspiration from Anna, who after being killed in a car explosion, was given a second chance at earning a ticket to heaven by doing good to those she have wronged. He said Anna's story shows the importance of "making amends, asking for forgiveness, attaining closure and deserving a second chance."

In his review of “100 Days to Heaven,” Torre called it “as this season’s most inspiring TV series.”

And as Anna's mission in the program continues, the viewers can expect more inspiring stories and moving scenes with the entry of veteran actor Christopher de Leon and controversial actor Albie Casiño, who will play father and son in the show.

Meanwhile, “100 Days to Heaven” also remains as the most-watched TV program across the country with a 32.9% national TV rating on Kantar Media last August 5 as opposed to the 21.5% TV rating of GMA’s “Amaya.”

Native Tribes in Panay- Bukidnon complaining about inaccuracy of 'Amaya'; Amaya's set submerged in mud!

It's said that the native tribes of Panay-Bukidnon in Capiz are complaining because GMA7’s hit epicserye, “Amaya,” is not accurate in portraying the “binukot” (tribal princess) that Marian Rivera plays in the show.

Marian will be a warrior later in the story and they say that will never happen in their culture as “binukots,” as their historians say they’re very conservative and will not be allowed to disrobe, like what Gina Alajar forced Marian to do in “Amaya.”

“Amaya” Director Mac Alejandre wants to make it clear, though, that the tribes shown in the show are not exactly the Panay-Bukidnon tribe of Capiz but stand for the indigenous peoples in various parts of the country before we were colonized by the Spaniards. They took the artistic liberty in telling the story of “Amaya” and are not referring to any specific tribe at all.

“Wala kaming masamang intention sa show,” Direk Mac says. “If they’d go on watching the show, they’ll see that Amaya is not portayed as a bad woman. She’s just a victim of circumstances so she has to make her own journey from being a princess to a slave, a babaylan and later, a warrior who’ll save her people from oppressors. Panoorin muna sana nila bago husgahan.”

The bad weather lately has hampered the taping of “Amaya.” “We built an entire village of 40 huts in Pagsanjan and because of the rains, lubog 'yun sa putik. Ang hirap mag-taping. We’re praying for better weather kasi one week lang ang stock episodes namin and we need to tape new episodes soon para hindi kami maubusan.”

Marian Rivera not worthy for the 'Primetime Queen' title!

IT’S BEEN weeks since we jotted down our first impressions of the new GMA 7 teleserye, “Amaya”—and, with reason: We wanted to give the show enough time to iron out its kinks, and its stars to get their acts together. —Have they?

After you get over the attractive and compellingly exotic look and feel of “Amaya” and concentrate on its unfolding storyline, you can’t shake off the impression that its visual exoticism is masking a rather predictable story.

True enough, after some weeks in play, the series’ plot line is turning out to be a mere variation on teleseryes’ generic penchant for love, perceived betrayal, revenge, and all sorts of strife and convoluted conflicts.

The lead character of Amaya (Marian Rivera) is hated by the Datu’s wife (Gina Alajar) because she’s the daughter of his mistress (Lani Mercado). So, she moves heaven and earth to make life a living hell for her romantic rival (whom she banishes) and her love child (whom she turns into a slave after her father’s death—as a result of the spurned queen’s false testimony).

Thus is the series shaping up as an eventual duel between the queen and Amaya. Which may be why Gina’s role is being built up so much, to make her a really formidable foe, virago and mega-monster, when push must finally come to shove.

The intention is clear, but the build-up lacks dynamism and believability, because the queen’s motivations and actuations are the standard stuff of TV melodramas, simply given a period and ethnic twist.

Vicious acts

Gina is reputed to be a formidable actress, but even her most florid and vicious acts of vile and bile don’t move and shock viewers all that much—because it’s all been seen and done before.

As for Marian, this series is clearly meant to be her transformation and apotheosis as an actress of the first caliber, to match her reported popularity as local TV’s reputed “queen of primetime”—but, it fails to deliver on both counts.

To be fair to Marian, she works really hard to make her latest TV starrer a success—to the extent of “going backless” in some scenes to show how cruelly her character has been punished and degraded. She also shouts and expresses anger with greater unction than ever.

Unfortunately, she looks too fair and soft to be believable as a “warrior princess” in the making. Her crying scenes are still too “hagulgol” to be truly touching. And, her training scenes as a warrior are patently nominal and phlegmatic.

We trust that, after she gets over her current kawawa and aping-api stage as a slave and finally graduates to warrior-princess mode to avenge her father’s death, Marian will be able to rise to the occasion and thespic challenge—or else, Gina will make melodramatic mincemeat out of her.

—And, where’s the regal triumph in that for local TV’s so-called “primetime queen”?

Marian Rivera's 'Amaya' extended until November 2011!

So the rumor that GMA-7 executives were allegedly not happy with the performance of “Amaya” is not true. To stop the rumor, the Kapuso Network announced that they will extend the airing of the epicserye until November this year.

According to the management of GMA-7, they are happy with the performance of “Amaya” since it premiered last May 28. They pointed out that it captured the no. 1 spot in Mega Manila paving the way for their whole Telebabad line-up to regain leadership in the TV ratings.

Furthermore, the show is being endorsed by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Last Monday, June 20, Amaya registered 29.4% on AGB Nielsen’s Household Ratings beating its rival program Guns And Roses which only posted 21.1% The remaining Telebabad shows like Munting Heredera, Secret Garden, Temptation of Wife, and even late night programs like Saksi and I Witness also bested their rival programs in Mega Manila.

“Amaya” airs weeknights after Captain Barbell on GMA-7.

Professional culture scholars: 'Amaya' is misleading and inaccurate! Mali-Mali ang kwento?!

ILOILO CITY – An award-winning epic-chanter who belongs to an indigenous group on Panay Island has raised concerns over the depiction of its cultural beliefs and practices on GMA 7’s new series, “Amaya.”
Federico Caballero, 73, an elder of the Panay-Bukidnon community, said that, while the show may be fictional, the portrayal of its people’s practices, terms and beliefs are inaccurate. “Some of the things depicted do not reflect our culture,” Caballero told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Caballero is among 12 National Living Treasure awardees of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). He was recognized in 2000 for his work in the documentation of the oral literature, particularly the epics, of his people which was nearing extinction, according to a citation posted on the NCAA website.
About the Kapuso series, Caballero objected to the characterization of a supposed binukot (well-kept maiden) – Amaya, played by actress Marian Rivera.

At times offensive

In an article posted on the network’s website, www.gmanews.tv, the show’s producers and writers said Amaya’s character was inspired by the binukot of the Panay-Bukidnon indigenous people. The show, which premiered on May 30, liberally uses words in Hiligaynon and Kiniray, languages associated with the Panay-Bukidnon people.

Caballero said it was inaccurate, at times offensive, to show supposed binukot and members of the community half-naked or wearing skimpy clothes. “Our people, most especially the binukot, are conservative. We wear clothes that hardly expose skin,” he stressed.

Caballero’s mother, Preciosa Cataluna-Caballero, was a binukot from birth until she was (engaged to be married at 8 years old and) wed at 12 to a 15-year-old. She died in 1993.

Called Panay-Bukidnon or Sulodnon by scholars, the community is the largest indigenous group on Panay Island, living in the mountains of Tapaz and Jamindan towns in Capiz and in the towns of Calinog and Lambunao in Iloilo. The National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) estimates their number at 15,000 in Tapaz, 12,000 in Calinog and 6,000 in Jamindan.

The community, which also refers to its members as Tumanduk, has a rich oral tradition that consists of legends, epics and recorded events. The sugidanon (epics chanted in the archaic Panay language called the Dagil or Ligbok) tell the story and exploits of their local heroes.

The community’s rich oral literature is likewise expressed in the dilot (love songs), talda (repartee) and ulawhay (chanted narrative).

Anthropologists have recorded nine epics chanted for at least 162 hours. These epics are known to provide insights into the history, psyche and culture of the pre-Hispanic Panay Bisayan.

Caballero said Amaya’s character becoming a warrior, is particularly misleading because binukot are not allowed to be exposed even to sunlight – which accounts for their often fair complexion. They are trained to be adept epic-chanters and dancers, and to play native musical instruments, he said, adding that binukot command a much higher dowry than most maidens because of these physical attributes and skills.

Dr. Alicia Magos, a noted anthropologist and retired professor of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, has conducted extensive studies on the Panay-Bukidnon community. She said she has received complaints about the portrayal of the indigenous people, and especially the binukot, in “Amaya.” Magos said, “The use of the word binukot, detached from its proper historical and cultural context to represent characters in a fictional story, may be deceptive.”

GMA 7 rejoinder

Suzette Doctolero, the show’s head writer,” told the Inquirer last Friday: “‘Amaya’ is a work of historical fiction. We did research on pre-Hispanic times and found that there were binukot throughout the archipelago and in other Southeast Asian countries, as well as areas populated by Austronesian peoples. There’s a similar practice among Samoans.”

Doctolero said the show did not depict just the Panay-Bukidnon tribe. “It’s about the islands before the Spaniards arrived.”
